Did PSG Show Strength Beyond Attack?

Their performance in winning the PSG Ligue 1 has confirmed their dominance in French football once again, but this time, it’s a little different. It was no accident that they beat RC Lens 2-0 with attacking brilliance. It was all about control, patience and defence.

With this win, Paris Saint-Germain claimed their fifth consecutive Ligue 1 championship. That is impressive, but the way in which it’s done is even more impressive. PSG weren’t always in control against Lens. They had to be hard pressed and disciplined.

Manager Luis Enrique made this comment after the game. His team can now win in a different manner, he emphasized. This is essential to a side that is renowned more for their attacking than defending prowess. PSG’s approach was much different in past seasons, needing to outscore players for victories. However, this performance was more of a balance. Defense remained well-coordinated. Midfield went to great trouble to disrupt play. Maturity was shown when the game became tough for the team. As far as the tactical side, this could be the key. Consistent win title teams are adaptable teams. However, PSG’s ability to deal with the pressure situations gives them another dimension in their play.

This is also a sign of Enrique’s influence. He is building a team that is not only entertaining but efficient as well. Growth is being successful without complete control of the game. PSG were forced to respond to Lens at times but they never wilted. When they arrived, they remained on task and took opportunities.

As PSG celebrate a title, it is clear, the bigger message. They are evolving. So that evolution may make them even more deadly in the future competitions.
